Mary Marden Velasquez is Associate Dean for Research, Professor, and Director of the Center for Social Work Research and the Health Behavior Research and Training Institute at The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Velasquez is a federally funded researcher who, for the past 20 years, has conducted studies focusing on the use and effectiveness of motivational interviewing and brief interventions in the areas of alcohol, smoking and drug abuse, prenatal health and HIV prevention. She specializes in the development and implementation of interventions based on the Transtheoretical Model of behavior change. Her current projects include a NIDA-funded study to determine the efficacy of screening and brief intervention for drugs in the medical setting and a CDC-funded study on prevention of alcohol and tobacco-exposed pregnancies.
